The Sauk Prairie Area Historical Society (SPAHS) was started when a group of far-sighted Sauk City women in the late 1930s formed as a woman's club and deemed it was important to save and identify items of local historical importance. They used upstairs space in the old Sauk City Hall/Library to meet and to store items donated by local people.
In time they called themselves the Sauk City Museum Guild. In 1961 they became the Sauk Prairie Historical Society and then in 1993 evolved into the Sauk Prairie Area Historical Society—to take in the wider area of our community. Today the Society is located at the Tripp Memorial Museum in downtown Prairie du Sac. We host a variety of exhibits and events throughout the year and also preserve two historic churches located in the countryside of Honey Creek and Denzer.
The SPAHS is managed by a Board of Directors and two paid, part time staff members: our Communications Consultant and Accountant. As a nonprofit, we rely heavily on the support of our volunteers, community members, and grant opportunities to continue preserving our local history and providing quality educational programming and events. We are always welcoming new members and volunteers.
